What is obstructed defecation?
Repeated attempts, blockage or incomplete emptying can persist even with soft stool in the rectum. This differs from infrequent bowel movements alone.
Muscle coordination or anatomy?
Dyssynergia, rectocele or prolapse may contribute and can coexist. Examination and selected functional or imaging tests must be interpreted together; an imaging finding alone does not prove the symptom’s cause.
How is a treatment plan chosen?
Record stool consistency, straining and assistance. Stool regulation or specialised training may help. Surgery requires a specific, fully assessed indication rather than failure of one laxative.
