What is a rectocele?
The front rectal wall bulges toward the vagina because supporting tissue is weakened. It differs from rectal prolapse through the anus. It can be asymptomatic; imaging alone does not prove the cause of constipation.
When is it clinically important?
Incomplete emptying, trapped stool or needing vaginal support during evacuation deserves discussion. Muscle coordination problems or other prolapse may coexist, so imaging must match symptoms and examination.
Is surgery necessary?
Stool regulation and functional treatment may come first. Selected troublesome cases may need repair. Ask about expected evacuation improvement, not anatomical correction alone, and effects on pain, sexual function and associated prolapse.
