What does manometry measure?
A small catheter measures anal pressures, rectal sensation and responses to squeezing or attempted evacuation. It evaluates function; it does not examine the bowel lining like colonoscopy or diagnose cancer.
When is it useful?
Persistent evacuation difficulty or continence problems may warrant testing when results could affect management. Interpret it with symptoms, examination and other tests rather than one isolated number.
What does an abnormal result mean?
It may guide specialised training or further assessment, not automatically surgery. Ask which finding explains your symptoms and how it relates to balloon expulsion. The preparation guide covers practical test arrangements.
