Does every fistula need MRI?
Not necessarily. Examination may suffice for a clear simple fistula. MRI is more useful with recurrence, suspected branches, deep abscess, Crohn’s disease or unclear anatomy when the answer could change management.
Should an acute abscess wait for scanning?
Do not delay urgent assessment for a scheduled MRI when pain, fever or swelling is increasing. The team decides drainage and imaging priorities.
When should MRI be repeated?
Not simply after a fixed interval. Ask what has changed clinically and whether older images still answer the question. Provide the surgery date because postoperative changes affect interpretation.
