Daily life with a seton: hygiene, drainage and follow-up

Masarat is created and supervised by Dr. Mohammed Hatem Alsubaih, Consultant Colorectal and General Surgeon.

Discharge with a loose seton may be expected because it maintains drainage. Follow gentle cleaning and skin-care advice; never tighten or cut it. Duration depends on the plan rather than a universal deadline.

Drainage may be the purpose

Discharge with a loose seton may be expected because it maintains drainage. Follow gentle cleaning and skin-care advice; never tighten or cut it. Duration depends on the plan rather than a universal deadline.

Bowel movements and activity

Follow prescribed pain relief, stool regulation, washing and dressing instructions. Discuss work, driving and exercise in relation to the procedure and symptoms. Avoid suppositories or enemas without approval. Track improvement rather than daily wound photographs.

When is urgent contact needed?

Fever, increasing pain or swelling, heavy bleeding, urinary difficulty or systemic deterioration needs urgent assessment. Keep team contacts and review dates. Persistent drainage without progress warrants examination rather than self-directed repeat antibiotics.
