Why is a seton placed?
A seton loops through the fistula tract. A loose seton maintains drainage and may precede another closure procedure; it does not prove either treatment failure or final healing. Its purpose differs from a cutting seton used in selected cases.
What happens while it is in place?
Some discharge may require a small pad. Follow your team’s cleaning instructions and never pull, cut or push the thread inside. Contact the team if it falls out. Increasing pain, swelling or fever needs urgent assessment.
What should follow-up clarify?
Ask whether drainage is temporary or part of longer-term management and what must improve before the next step. Duration varies. Keep the operation name, date and follow-up plan, and report any change in continence.
