After a LIFT procedure: what to monitor at home

Masarat is created and supervised by Dr. Mohammed Hatem Alsubaih, Consultant Colorectal and General Surgeon.

After LIFT, the wound, drainage and symptoms are assessed together. Skin closure or pain relief alone does not prove fistula healing; follow-up evaluates persistence or recurrence.

Skin healing is not the whole outcome

After LIFT, the wound, drainage and symptoms are assessed together. Skin closure or pain relief alone does not prove fistula healing; follow-up evaluates persistence or recurrence.

Bowel movements and activity

Follow prescribed pain relief, stool regulation, washing and dressing instructions. Discuss work, driving and exercise in relation to the procedure and symptoms. Avoid suppositories or enemas without approval. Track improvement rather than daily wound photographs.

When is urgent contact needed?

Fever, increasing pain or swelling, heavy bleeding, urinary difficulty or systemic deterioration needs urgent assessment. Keep team contacts and review dates. Persistent drainage without progress warrants examination rather than self-directed repeat antibiotics.
