Anal discharge: what do its pattern and persistence mean?

Masarat is created and supervised by Dr. Mohammed Hatem Alsubaih, Consultant Colorectal and General Surgeon.

Discharge from a skin opening differs from mucus passed with stool or fecal staining. Colour alone cannot identify the cause. Record where it comes from, its consistency and whether swelling improves after drainage.

Pus, mucus or stool leakage?

Discharge from a skin opening differs from mucus passed with stool or fecal staining. Colour alone cannot identify the cause. Record where it comes from, its consistency and whether swelling improves after drainage.

What does examination look for?

The clinician checks for a fistula opening, skin irritation and problems inside the anal canal. Repeated drainage from the same site after an abscess suggests a fistula may need investigation. Rectal discharge may instead require assessment for inflammation or infection.

Will MRI help?

MRI can address a suspected deep, recurrent or branching fistula. It does not explain every case of mucus or leakage and cannot replace examination. Bring previous drainage or operation reports.

What can I do meanwhile?

Clean gently, pat dry and avoid fragranced products or probing the opening. Increasing pain, swelling or fever needs urgent assessment, even if discharge suddenly decreases.

Privacy and assessment scope

Questions run in this page without asking for your name, phone number or intimate images. Optional AI assessment sends your answers and text to Cloudflare only with your consent; files are sent when you request extraction. Remove identifiers before upload. The app creates no permanent medical record. Its automated output is not a personal consultation with the doctor. Answers do not persist after reload and are not sent automatically to the clinician. WhatsApp is an external service; the booking button does not attach medical answers. Saved or copied reports contain health information: review them and choose who to share them with.

App files may be cached locally for offline use; this does not include assessment answers. Hosting services process ordinary web requests under their policies. Guidance is automated education, not a diagnosis, prescription or clinician-issued report.
